I found the introduction to All Over the Map: Rethinking American Regions, very interesting, and a few discussion type questions came to mind. Then the reading from the Shaping of America made me wonder how these questions applied to Virginia today.
How are regional identities tied to the history of that region and how are they affected by modern development? How do regions maintain their identities? And who creates these regional identities?Do people of the region, or people from outside the region create these identities, and how are the identities affected by this?
Finally, what is Virginia’s identity and how has Virginia’s identity changed? How did it’s slower development in the beginning and the influence of the tobacco industry affect its identity?
