Week 4 Question

After finishing this week’s reading, my question is how does a “region” come to be defined as such, specifically those within the early American settlements?  Granted, each section was founded or lead by different individuals and is composed slightly differently, but is that enough to segregate “regions” when the ultimate goals are identical to the neighbor’s?  Why does that slight variation of leadership cause a regional division, between Maryland and Virginia for instance, instead of a union between the two?
